Kickstart Scheme

The Government’s Kickstart scheme is designed to create thousands of high quality 6-month work placements for young people whose dreams, careers and ideal jobs have been affected by COVID-19. It is aimed at 16 - 24 year olds who are currently on Universal Credit.

This scheme presents an excellent opportunity for candidates to gain essential and relevant work experience. It also provides a perfect opportunity for organisations to help support young people through the early stages of their career and give them much needed support and hope during these unprecedented times.

Atwood Tate will act as your Representative Organisation/Gateway, facilitating the process for our clients who wish to access the KickStart Scheme. Employers are only able to apply for funding directly if they are creating 30 or more job placements. We are therefore partnering with businesses large and small across all sectors to pool job vacancies and apply for funding on your behalf. We will use our expertise and knowledge of recruitment to provide optimum access to qualifying candidates. By creating partnerships with our clients to access the scheme we hope to maximise its benefits by significantly increasing the number of opportunities available for young people.

We have an excellent Professional Development and Employability Programme for the Kickstarters to access during their placement, to increase their long term employability chances. We are also committed to helping them find permanent work or further contracts at the end of their placement. Many of our clients will hopefully be in the position to offer their Kickstart placement a permanent role within their company at the end of the 6 month period, helping to make the scheme truly successful.

This is an excellent opportunity for the publishing and media industries to encourage and support this generation of young people, regardless of background, to develop skills, gain vital experience and, in turn, give them real hope for the future. This scheme has the potential to ‘kickstart’ true diversity within our industry!

How the Scheme works

The Government will fund 100% of the relevant National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage for 25 hours per week, plus associated employer National Insurance contributions and employer minimum automatic enrolment contributions, for 6 months. £1,500 is also available per placement for support and training.

Who can apply for funding?

All our clients are eligible to apply for funding. The only criteria is that the job placements created with Kickstart funding must be new jobs and cannot:

  • replace existing or planned vacancies
  • cause existing employees or contractors to lose or reduce their employment

The roles you are applying for must be:

  • a minimum of 25 hours per week, for 6 months
  • paid at least the National Minimum Wage for their age group
  • should not require people to undertake extensive training before they begin the job placement

Each application should include how you will help the participants to develop their skills and experience, including:

  • support to look for long-term work, including career advice and setting goals
  • support with CV and interview preparations
  • supporting the participant with basic skills, such as communication, problem solving and teamwork

The funding is available from November 2020.
